Some quotes about sampling music

My little sampler does a lot, but it won't choose the music for me.

My little sampler does a lot, but it won't choose the music for me.

Man, I love my MPC-500. It feels really good to have all that musical ability and quality right there at my fingers. It is like a really fine paintbrush or something artsy like that. But the darn thing does not do one thing for me: choose the music for me.

I consider the whole sonic universe to be spectrum for sampling. My aesthetics keep me from “biting” however. This means stealing someone elses chops. Now if there is a beat that I like and can’t figure out how to follow it, I may take a whole rhythm section, but I will layer the hell out of it.

Check out these quotes from some giants of sampling. DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin and Chuck D among others go on the record talkin’ ’bout samplin’.

On a seperate note, Outta has been excepted into a gallery display of blogs, because they think we are so really cool. Thanks We Love WP! (Yes, this is a shameless campaign to get my blog readership up.)

Hijacking some vinyl… the Soup

In the Lab. Turntables, computer, mixer in the drawer, lots of stereo components. And last - but definitely not least - some vinyl.

After learning about MJ’s death, I realized I hadn’t listened to his music for awhile. Travesty, I said to myself. My wife has a fair amount of his music in her collection, so I took out my favorites. What could I do to have the music more immediate? I wanted to listen to some of his songs to really break ‘em down for the beats and rhythms. I listen to a lot of my music on my computer (and my iPod.) It is easy to drop and play music on the Pod. But I really like to have music digitally for sampling too.

This is where the program Audio Hijack Pro comes in. It allows to just jack in my mixer to my computer and burn a lossless recording to the harddrive. I liiiikkke it!

Rest in Peace, MJ

Can it really be that the man is gone? Wow, I feel like that was the end of a huge part of my generation! From the J5 to the later dance music, MJ’s music has been on most of our record players hundreds – if not thousands! – of times. Screw what we have been hearing about the pseudo-molestation hearings. That bullshit will never touch the memories of his legend. DANCE ON!
